Rum Shelf

Dood’s Rum

I’ve managed to collect a few rums over the years.  Some of the rums in my collection I’ve purchased, some I’ve hunted down, some have been gifts from friends, and – yes – some are free samples provided by brands for review.  Here’s a list of most of the rums in my collection.  I’ve left out any rums that I’ve discovered that don’t possess labels, are home infusions or blends, or are not yet commercially available (that part of my collection is about another 30 bottles of rum).

Rums that have been reviewed thus-far have links to them.  At some point I may change this so that it links to all articles that deal with that rum, but for now, it’s just the reviews.  If you see a rum here that I have but haven’t reviewed and you have a question about, feel free to contact me.  If you see a rum missing from my list that you can’t believe I don’t have, feel free to let me know.  Donations Recommendations are also always accepted!

I was just curious to know your opinion on the rum Pyrat XO Reserve as you do not have it in your review section but you do have it on your shelf. The rum is inexpensive but receives great reviews from other rum critics. Are the reviews justified or would I be better off going in another direction for an inexpensive good rum.

Darren:

You’re right, I’ve been a bit of a slacker in getting through the entire list. The Pyrat XO is not all that great in my opinion. I think it has some great qualities for a mixer – a great funkiness especially – but it also has what I feel is a strong and artificial orange flavor. Pyrat insists that they don’t flavor their rums, but I’m not sure I buy it.

I’d recommend avoiding it, personally. However, I know plenty of rum lovers who adore Pyrat, so my advice is to find a way to taste it first and then buy, if at all possible.

Have you tried Elements8 rum from St Lucia – independently owned brand sourced from St Lucia Distillers – sells mainly in Europe at top end i.e. bottle is £sterling 32.00 – for the white and gold ($60.00).

I have. I tried it at UK Rumfest in 2008. It’s great stuff. Wish they sold it out here.

You need to try and grab a bottle of Treaty Oak, from Austin TX. Its a damn fine rum for a white anyways. Also there is a thing called Rumble from the Balcones Distillery. Its not technically a rum because its made out of honey and figs but made like a rum, and is really an interesting rum substitute in certain cocktails.

I actually have Treaty Oak. It’s not bad. I find it to be a little bland and basic to be honest.

Are there any spiced rums that you would consider a good rum for sipping?

If so, what brands? If not what would you recommend as a sipper for someone just starting to get seriously into rum?

Matt Robold February 28, 2010 at 11:03 am

Eric,

I don’t really sip spiced rums a lot. If I had to pick one or two to sip on their own, they would probably be Old New Orleans Cajun Spiced Rum and Foursquare Spiced Rum.

Hey, first off, I’d just like to say sir; thanks for an excellent, entertaining and informative website. A current lack of funding is preventing my drinking much in the way of top-shelf rum, but this site has provided an excellent diversion and is giving me some great ideas for the future.

Now, on to the questions… first off, I notice a bottle of Kilo-Kai in amongst the collection. I tried this not to long ago, it was a little too sweet and strongly cinnamon flavored for my liking, but I was curious about your opinion. Also, is there really a rum (Khukri Daggar) from Nepal? What’s that all about?

Do you know about, or have you tried Buffalo Trace 17 yr Rum, its part of their experimental collection, it only comes in a 375, and is a little pricey. They have it at my local liquor store, but I was wondering if you knew anything about it. I would like to try it but I’m not sure i wanna take the plunge if it sucks, any thoughts?

I thought myself to be somewhat of a connoisseur ( well not really) of rum and other drinks but now that I found this web site I find that I know nothing of rum except how to drink it. I love LemonHart rum and have for years. But now I see I have to broden my taste and get started on trying something different. We tend to get stuck if we find something we like as I live in a small town that doesn’t have a wide varity of choice. And when we go to the big lights there is always so much to do I forget about such things. But now I am going to make an effort to start a rum collection.

Great to hear, Lionel! The best part about a rum collection? Drinking it. ;-)

Mate, i noticed you have mentioned the Matusalem platino (white) but also their classico is fantastic. I am a cocktail barman and love the caramel sweetness to it and have made a signature dirty mojito with ginger beer and raw sugar syrup with hinted cinamon. The fuller flavour is enhancd with the mint and the spice of the ginger beer totally transforms the whole mojito. As we have no real access to many rums which would you suggest as great for fusing? Platino is sweet and has a clean finish and works great with mint and vanilla bean however matusalem isnt cheap on our parts. Any other labels for consideration would be ideal. Cheers

When I was in New Orleans, I went to Old New Orleans Rum and I tasted their whole, but limited lineup of rums. They have a crystal, spiced, three-year, and ten year. I thought that the ten year was extraordinary and that spiced and three year were very good, the spiced, with some sweet tea and ice. On the tour they mentioned that they had won awards for their spiced rum and sold 90% of their stock in Lousiana. I know they ship out of state. These might be some rums worth trying.

Cheers. Keep up the good work.

Hi Matt
I have a limited edition 2000 millinium 4.5 litre bottle of coruba rum.
The bottle that I have has label no.844/2000 and has never been opened. I’ve had it for 10 years. Would you know if it is worth anything.

Cheers
Rochelle

Hi Matt
I have a bottle of “Brown’s Overproof” rum. It is 27 years old. Printed on the bottle is “Double distilled. A quality pot still rum matured in very small oak casks. H. G. Brown & Sons. wine merchants. Chatswood.
N.S.W. 2211D. On the back is “COLLECTOR SERIES No.2.
New South Wales, Australia. It is unopened. Do you know anything about it? Cannot find the company. Can you throw some light on it.
Thanks a lot.
Carol
