While most aged rums are aged solely in used bourbon casks, several rum makers have been experimenting with finishing their rums in other types of wood, like used sherry casks. At the forefront of this movement are the Dos Maderas rums.
Snowflakes are falling. Gifts are being wrapped and given. Cards and candles are everywhere. It’s almost like there’s something special going on this time of year. While spending time – willingly or otherwise – with friends and family, it just feel right without the right drink to add to the merriment (or help with the […]
Egg Nogg, or Egg Nog, or Eggnog – however you spell it, it’s synonymous with the holidays. A drink older than the term “cocktail” that many associate with it, its origins lie somewhere in the 18th Century with popular “flips” or drinks made with spirits and eggs, often served hot, but not necessarily so. Much […]
Most people probably don't know this, but in 2008 I found myself at a fork in the rode, debating whether to drop the cocktail blogging for cycling and blogging about that. I got really into it for about 12 months and then found other things to do, as is my wont.
One of the goals I had that I never met was riding a full century - a 100 mile ride. In Southern California that is typically accomplished by riding from Orange County to San Diego. Somewhere along the way I just lost my motivation.

When the air gets a bit too warm and the beaches beckon, there are a few things that come to mind that must be had immediately. Loose-fitting clothes or tight bathing suits must be matched with sunscreen and some body of water. Friends must be gathered and all must enjoy some sort of cool, refreshing drink to calm the warm embrace of the sun. Few drinks are turned to in this time of need more often than the Mojito.
2 oz Rum
.75 oz Lime Juice
1 tsp Sugar or .5 oz Simple Syrup
Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Both drinks are standard-bearers for rum, but both also share a common ancestor - the most iconic rum drink of all, the Daiquiri.
Queen’s Park Swizzle
Created in Trinidad, constructed with Guyanese rum and a heavy dose of Trinidad's most famous product, it's awfully hard to turn down a Queen's Park Swizzle. The drink is so refreshing and delicious that in 1946 one Trader Vic declared the Queen's Park Swizzle to be "the most delightful form of anesthesia given out today."
Sure, that was in 1946, but the recent resurgence of rum has seen a lot of incredible tropical drinks that were well-past their original heyday return with a vengeance. In bars all over the US, if they have a strong rum selection, they probably have a ...
Iconic rum drinks are numerous. From the daiquiri to the mojito to the omnipresent "Rum & Coke" (or Cuba Libre if you're going to do it properly), they're everywhere. In 1944 one of the most iconic rum cocktails of all, perhaps only dwarfed by the daiquiri, was introduced by Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron. The flagship of all tiki drinks, it's just hard to beat a good Mai Tai.
Rum 101: Six Summer Cocktails
Rum 101 is a continuing series of posts on rum and rum cocktails
Beating the summer heat is one of the top priorities for any person living outside of the Arctic Circle when the sun begins its months-long crusade to bake every person on the face of the planet. While we’re half-way through summer here in the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemispherists are still waiting for their summer, it seemed like a good idea to talk about six summer rum drinks to keep you cool and refreshed while in your bathing suit.
