Mixology Monday: Pain In The Ass Drinks

The merry months continue to pass on by in their irresistible march towards a future full of rum and riches for yours truly (that is where we’re headed right? I really hope this isn’t like the time I got on the wrong train and ended up in Oceanside when I meant to go to LA). Of course, such a passing of time inevitably brings us our next Mixology Monday.

Tommy Bahama White Sands

When I first discovered that Tommy Bahama had their own rum, I’ll admit that I was less than interested. A white rum in an incredibly heavy and expensive bottle made by a company that’s well-known for its high prices and its faux island lifestyle didn’t really appeal to me. There are already plenty of rums that are well-known for their low prices and faux island lifestyle. I didn’t need a pricey, fake rum like Tommy Bahama. It turns out I didn’t know what I was missing.

Queen’s Park Swizzle

Created in Trinidad, constructed with Guyanese rum and a heavy dose of Trinidad’s most famous product, it’s awfully hard to turn down a Queen’s Park Swizzle. The drink is so refreshing and delicious that in 1946 one Trader Vic declared the Queen’s Park Swizzle to be “the most delightful form of anesthesia given out today.”

La Favorite Blanc

La Favorite has been producing Rhum Agricole on the island of Martinique since around 1843. The Blanc is made by distilling a fermented mash of freshly pressed sugar cane juice. A single copper column still is used to produce the blanc, which is taken off of the still at around 70% abv (140 proof). This white spirit is then rested in oak before being bottled at 50% abv (100 proof).

Milk Punch

It’s Mixology Monday and once again we’re coming in at the last possible second to get another great rum cocktail turned in on time.  It’s not that I don’t plan ahead.  I honestly do.  It’s more that planning does not equal doing.  As the saying goes, the path to the bar is paved with good [...]

Coconaut

It’s not often that you’ll see me recommending a drink that calls for a blender. I have several friends that are trying to break me of my resistance as there are actually quite a few awesome Tiki drinks that employ this device’s dark powers of crush and/or puree. Drinks like this one only help their cause.

The Coconaut is another Jeff Berry creation, originally given to the world via his book, Beachbum Berry’s Grog Log. A mixture of coconut cream, rum, lime juice and a blender full of ice, it’s an utterly amazing drink that can pack quite a wallop.

Montanya Oro

Rum from Colorado just sounds a bit “off.”  Who in their right mind would decide that the Rocky Mountains is the right place to plop down a distillery to make the favored spirit of the Caribbean? Karen and Brice Hoskin would. They started Montanya in 2008 with the idea of making rum using fresh, American-grown [...]
